Where oh where can my little car park?
We the people of the Ops floor are thoroughly disgusted by the parking situation at OEMC. People have to park in aisles, upside down, and almost on top of each other to make it in the "company parking lot," which was originally for us. Now that Streets & Sanitation, TMAs (another post of its own), and whoever else the city may decide there's room for in our cramped quarters, are here? They take up half the parking lot.
We understand the need to find parking, apparently "By Any Means Necessary." Noone's going to park in the unsecured gravel lot two blocks away from the job. But we DON'T understand how people see imaginary "Reserved for XXXXXXXX" signs at the front of the lot near the handicapped parking spaces.
Maybe the city should stop trying to squeeze Operations out of its own building and making it the least important part of OEMC.
But at least they got rid of those foot-tall speed bumps at the guard shack.

Anyone else wonder why those assigned to the guard shack can't be bothered to maybe step outside of it and prevent some of the near collisions at shift change? More cars coming in and out of the lot since it's not just ops floor personnel in the lot. And since they let people park along Laflin you can't see when you pull out onto the street.
And could someone tell the building engineer that drives the maroon jeep cherokee to slow the hell down??!!! It's a parking lot for chrissake!!!! SLOW DOWN!
Some do step out of the guard shack, they wonder about the same issue SPEED! Slow down it's one lane and there's no signs to prevent parking on the street. The parking off the corner needs to be reinforced by the district just like the continual illegal u-turns right in the drive directly in front of the unsafe guard shack.
Keep in mind Security is for the immediate perimeter of OEMC not exterior streets. Their hands are tied also, there is an effort to destroy the assignment coming out of 311 and no one wants to provide any type of training let alone training for better protection of the facility nor proper equipment.
It's a wing and prayer at its best. It's an ongoing battle. They have no back up and it's an inside game with the some of the assigned manpower. There are some good people detailed there. You see them sometimes then you don't and then there are the not so good, they scare the good even. Workers are ignored slackers rewarded. The workers are concerned about your, the city and their safety but no one is listening, sound familiar?
This is not going to win me any friends, but actually, management has been pretty clear that parking is a privilege. I'm amazed that we even get FREE parking. My last job, I had to pay to park everyday. For ten years. If you are there early enough, there are spaces. And if there are no spaces, then, that is the day that you have to park in the aisle until 2nd watch leaves. This is not an issue to take a stand on, or shed blood over. There are too many other important issues that are ACTUALLY issues - like needing new equipment (CHAIRS - we need CHAIRS!!!), mandatory o.t., etc. We have to choose real battles with management - ones that make sense. Otherwise, we stay in the little mouse wheel, going round and round and round ....
Go see what it is like parking at some of the districts. At least you dont have tow trucks running through your lot picking up peoples cars and scratching everything you go buy. Look at the Academy, no where to park there, look at head quarters. Get over it. Live with it. We have garbage cicilians parking at headquarters while some officer that has been hurt and is on crutches walks 3 blocks to the medical section.
Concerning the officers in the guard shack: Their light/limited duty and should not be there anyway. I never understood if the medical section is sending you to 311 so you won't work the streets, then why does 311 turn around and put you right next to the street in the guard shack? A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
An off duty PO

Limited Duty police are throughout the dept. Is it possible the Alderman have any assigned to them? Their in units doing manual labor. Their in the National Guard, and so as not to continue all the other locations a long string their also at the board of Ed. Many hold part time jobs doing security work.
The determination of what they can and cannot do is made by their personnel physician or the city Dr. for IOD, not by a Commanding Officer who has no medical degree or license to practice and prescribe. Each have their own restrictions to which the medical section limits to a great degree and to which the city has had consent degrees issued and lawsuits won in favor of disabled officers. All limited duty are carried as full duty with a limited duty assignment.
I would think the guard shack is considered as a administrative inside position. The responsibility then would be to protect the interior position of OEMC not exterior. They are police officers and they will think and do what is needed of them within the interior if any sh+t hits the fan as would any others that may also be assigned positions.
I would think the only main concern would be how police oriented they are. As this would better determine how they would think, along with working indepently, as well as a team, which at any time could be placed under pressure in todays climate of terrorism. This is to the benefit of everyones safety and security throughout the city.
Speaking of telling people to slow down...
T.J (??) the TMA Supervisor..drives like an idiot.many people have had several near collisions with him..and let's not forget to mention the idiots that work in those trailers..they drive like they think the parking lot is a nascar track
No one should care about winning friends with comments..however, that being said..I don't know how long you've been working here..but when i started..they did promise us a parking spot. In fact, it was one of the things they were most proud of
On parking and security I noticed there are more cars without permits then are with them. This is a major problem which is not being addressed by mg-mt. No wonder parking is hard. I would also say currently were not a very secure facility and that is a very real issue which is being ignored.
In all fairness is it just me or are some of the security personnel better than other's. There's one on afternoons that looks like her most important job is reading, talking on the phone and being a door opener. The door thing is appreciated some of the times, but I keep wondering where she keeps disappearing to. She's no where in the front. She's regularly at the desk and has short hair. I thought they couldn't be absent from the desk at all for security reasons and that someone has to be there at all times? How many security people do they have per day anyway.
After reading you comment in all fairness, get real, spend more time at your workstation, and as far as wondering, maybe she's going to the bathroom, or has a medical condition. In any case I've found her to be pleasant, astute, and willing go out of her to way help someone, too bad you obviously don't possess any of these qualities or you'd know. Do the rest of us a favor and quit.

Then you proved the point she's not qualified, she's not down there to go out of her way for you she's not their to be an assist to us. She's police and main security not our doorman not our food caller. We appreciate these actions but your also not familiar with not leaving the position at ANY time someone has to be there at all times. Read our orders and she's not in the bathroom either. Their police and there to secure the facility so someone would have to be there even for washroom breaks at all times. So lets get this straight your defending someone who is disregarding their and our written directions/orders. Basis to keep us safe and in violation, by regularly walking off and far away from her position to secure the main entrance and you tell this blogger to quit. No wonder we have real problems! Heaven for bid all h&ll breaks loose. If as you did claim, her medical condition is forcing her to not be there, then guess what? She can't do the job at OEMC and needs to be placed where leaving her position is not crucial. This is to her benefit and all of OEMC and the city. Thank you for substantiating the points of indifference and gross neglect. Hope I'm not surrounded by a lot of other's here at OEMC who feel indifferent to our safety including your own. Tend to think there are more with common sense than not, now who should really consider leaving.
