Chicago Dispatchers

We know we have neglected our posts of late,

So don't bother writing to state the obvious.

Let us first comment on some goings on at the OEMC this past month, shall we? We hear negotiations are in progress. Dare we expect something GOOD to come from these proceedings?

We have been informed, but have not actually SEEN, any of the unions requests nor the city counterproposals and vice versa. Is this because the union has no concrete strategy for comprehensive long term negotiations (our educated guess) or for other reasons such as their proposals are so weak as to incite immediate anger among the rank and file? Just asking.

The "final" seniority list has been posted, after the last "final" seniority list was deemed incorrect. Does anyone really believe there aren't any errors in this one too? And can someone please advise us how a certain employee, not seen at OEMC for YEARS, is still listed w his/her class and issued a seniority number despite the contract which specifically states seniority stops accruing after 12 months?

Second, today is Halloween which, along w/ New Year's Eve and the 3rd/4th of July, is one of the busiest days of the year. PCOS best be EXTRA careful as we can remember that some of the highest profile incidents (and most nonsense discipline) seem to result from these days. Any reports from the front lines will be appreciated.

yeah it was pleasant having the supv's stand behind you telling you to dispatch certain yellow jobs, "as soon as you can" even though we DID have backlogs in. um, WHO would u like me to give it to? supposedly because a certain boss was panicking over ALL the jobs in the yellow. not sure how true that was, but come on - it's Halloween. what do u expect?

Why give out those loose dog calls?? Doesn't Animal Control take those?? We don't have dog catcher gear...

You would be amazed at what calls animal control does NOT respond to. It's kinda like 311 transferring abandoned auto calls to 911, when the directive specifically states that any vehicle left stationary for over 7 days is considered abandoned and then handled by 311. They don't care. They transfer the caller to an EMERGENCY operator anyway, just so they don't have to bother with the call. Idiots.

Don't know if any "old-time" dispatchers remember this retired P/O, Tom Burns. He died earlier this week. He was on the city-wide 1, I think, when he retired about 15 years ago. Funeral services 10 NOV from Blake-Lamb on 103rd st. Visitation on 09 NOV.

He was a real nice guy. You couldn't forget him. He had an Irish brogue in his voice it was so thick you could cut it with a knife.

rest in peace, Tommy

11-06-07 00:50 you shouldn't be so quick to call names to the 311 operators for I am a 311 operator and we get just as many 911 calls transfered to us as you get 311 calls transfered to you. I won't go into detail but I think we both have the some of same issues with each other that probably will never be resolved.

I think most of the blame at 311 lies with the P.O.s down there who, instead of taking a report they are supposed to, send the call to 911.

Thank God...Mary Jo is going on furlough...she needs to retire....she thinks she is the frigging commander of the 16th and 17th districts...talk about a know it all...word has it that she is in some VERY hot water over sending in appropriate PDT messages about officers and an investigation has been launched...she has said some VERY nasty things about officers including a comment about "why doesn't someone just kill them" about two officers in a northside district...Not too smart ...that will get you fired...but we all know she is a goof.

Union meeting was a blast! Vice pres had no idea how pissed off we all were. C****r kept getting up and whispering!in their ears. What a 2 face. Archie could have brought a tear to the eye, fabulous speech!! Go my brother!
Unfortunetly I missed Derrick's speech heard it brought the house down too. Lupe was not one to contend with he brought the brawn into the picture. Thank goodness for that, enough of being spoken to like we are in the fifth grade, while they quietly sneak more union dues out of us. Senority was the main topic. Stop messing with our seniority! If the new kids don't like not getting overtime, don't worry it will still there in 5 years when you get some time in. Unamimous show of hands against the rotating seniority list and to remain on the pilot program sign up sheets per watch that we have. Don't know the full outcome had to get back to zone, but next time someone should bring a video camera ;) we will just set it zoomed in on the ibew panel.

To the 311 operator. It's all good. Most of us understand, our managemnt and lack thereof, is a joke. I'm sure your people are as confused as our people, training isn't a tenth of what it used to be, events with mispelled words, wrong classifications, made up abbreviations, mandatory questions not asked, etc. The list is endless. Personally anytime I've ever needed to use the 311 system I've had nothing but good exxperiences with the help I've received. It's a thankless job like ours, so thicken up the skin and collect the paychecks. Pco2

I agree with 11:47. I've had good experiences with 311 and we do need to stick together and give each other grace. We do have our bad days on both sides for those who have had a bad experience. Let's make each others day and be one of the positive calls out of the mix when we talk to each other.

i am a newbie....well not the newest batch of newbies but still very new....i don't agree with the seniority issue at this point....if you don't have seniority to get some over time then you don't ! that's that.....i mean you should get some special treatment and fist pick after putting up with this job for so long.....if putting in 10 years on the job can't get you at least that, then whats the point....the pay after 10 years isn't something to write home about ! not all the new people agree with what's happening, so dont make it seem that way! i understand that it would be in our advantage (obviously) but in the long run we all get screwed over!

is off topic.. but I know that many bosses read this blog..

I live in the 18th dist and I called the police to report a loud party on a busy friday night. the police showed up in less then 5 mins and shut the party down and restored peace.

I was unable to see the beat that showed up. but they did a great job clearing out 100 kids in 10 mins.

I then tried to call 311 to see if I could send a message to say thanks to the officers but 311 was unable to do that. 311 then transferred me to 911 and they then sent me to 18th dist desk who then told me that they are unable to take any messages for cars on the street.. they then sent me back to 311 who told me that any words of praise would have to be official and written then sent to the headquarters ( even if I did not have the officers names) so 20 mins later I got nothing.

AGAIN ALL I WAS TRYING TO DO WAS SAY THANKS FOR A GOOD JOB.

So it seems that it's so easy to call and complain about the police. But it's so hard, dam near impossible for a citizen to praise the good work of the police.

so why can't someone make this a little easier.
In this day and age, why not let citizens call in letters of praise and let it go on the officers record. I would be willing to bet you would have a lot more praise.. then complaints

Two points for the last post.

Businesses have studied the complaint/compliment ratios over time and determined that people are for more likely to drop a word when they have a complaint. I'd guess this applied to public services.

Your heart is in the right place though, and I may be able to help you below (in a second). I encourage all to take this poster's words to heart. I've dealt with enough call centers for tech issues (I'm a tech junkie) to know when the person on the other end of the line deserves a compliment. Like after calling Apple ten times and getting ten different people with a thousand different answers that take 20 cumulative hours, and then getting one guy who gets it right in 30 seconds on the first try. Ask to speak to a supervisor so you can provide a compliment for his record.

OK, so back to what you were asking, believe it or not, OPS solicits compliments. See "How to compliment an officer" on this website: http://www.opschicago.org/

Also......... if you had called 911 to begin with, there are SOME calltakers who probably would have taken the message for you, and sent a message to the dispatchers to give to the beat car... if it was a sincere Thank You.

Mind you- it is NOT their job to take messages like that. So if they didnt pass it on... then there's not much you can do.

Also, you were right to call 311 first since this was really not an emergency. Sorry you got passed around on the phone, but Thanks for acknowledging a Job Well Done by the unit in 018.

It's NOT very often that anyone says anything NICE about the CPD.
Thanks.

Would this blogmaster be willing to pass the mantle to others who would be willing to update more regularly? It would be nice to have a vibrant blog (both our blogs have fallen asleep pretty much.) SCC is a hard act to follow, but at least once a week would be nice.
