International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Maybe someone else can chime in and assist us in locating our little corner of Local 21 on the IBEW Local 21 website, because we surely aren't finding it. But it has to be there, we're too important for it not to be.

Our management doesn't respect our union or its business representative (he's often denied access to the building for the rare meetings), and our union and business representative don't respect us. Nothing's changed over the years, people. We're still partly at the mercy of Crossing Guards, who are in our bargaining unit and outnumber us by, say, 1600 or more? Management continues to treat us like they wish they could dump us in the trash bins behind Monroe Pavilion. Our own "Employee Liaison" treats us as if we're her stepchildren, and our union doesn't do very much to stop the shabby treatment we receive.

We hear a lot of talk about how fed up people are with the union, and how we should find a union that will actually stand with us, but we never see any action. Consider this a stand for action. Talk is cheap.

Guardians On The Zone

When I arrive each day for work
Not knowing what I’ll see
The feeling of safety is always there
Because they think of me

They think of me, they think of you,
They think of all who go
To every call of danger
Because it’s what they know

They know that though the day is slow
Or peaceful It can change
They know that evil lurks on streets
They know that life is strange

I for one am glad their there
My lifeline to getting home
They guide me when the job gets rough
My guardians on the zone

They are dispatchers, they are family
They are righteous, brave and just
They hold our lives in their hearts
It’s you we love and trust

Thank you

Hey all,
I know I, for one give you a lot of crap. However, never underestimate my knowledge that I need all of you. Pds51 and pd50 are my lifelines to the rest of the world and you Dana, Bryan, Shell, Tasha, and the rest of you are rarely rewarded and often ridiculed. Well. The only person that puts up with more shit from me is my wife. Thanks for dealing with me for all these years. Never take it personal, cause its not.

You are right the city has no use for their employees. You speak to the Crossing Guards, well your union and theirs gave up hopitalization insurance for new hires. Are you next?

The aldersluggs sure want to improve the lot of the big box store workers but give a dam about it's own workers.

How bout if we start an email campaign to the IBEW Local 21 website? They have a "feedback" section (at the very bottom) to send them email...let's see if they will actually respond. Seems like all they want to talk about is SBC and AT&T in the newsletter.

0329 Sorry that occurred to you.
There are a few factors that I have experienced when running info. Both my partner and I ran the same plate when the unit came in. More than once one puter hit and the other came up clear no record. Don't know why.
If you run an Id card, you have to run it like a dl (alpha char. in front) otherwise it won't run the head, just the sos Id card info. Recently I ran a full name check(no dl but a ss#) for one of my units, info came back but no warrants. Unit asked me what about blahblah town warrant. Not even on my screen! Unit ran it on a pdt under the DL # and guy popped. I researched it and found out SoS entered wrong info on DL, and when the LEADS info was entered into system they took the offs information off the DL. F*&^ed UP!

How does someone put into work overtime and never get called to work. But later finds out they were skipped over. Does anyone really care? You will when it happens to you! Stick together or NO PISSING AND MOANNING!

The city takes the union dues from your pay, the union gets, and no one covered as a union member gets anything!

Why? Because as long as the union gets your cash they're happy. The union and the city have had a long standing sweetheart deal. The city gives the union buisness and the union gives the city some money back.

That money goes to the city's general fund. The money in the general fund and other city funds that comes from illegal political activity is marked as income from legit sources.

Under the contract, no union reps have to be allowed in without prior permission. All the union rep has to do is show up, and the obligation for representation has been met.

The outfit still runs the city.

hi all, nice to see people are not getting too pissy here.. as for joining the FOP, they will not allow non-police to join.. when i was in the western burbs dispatching, they did offer to negotiate for us, but we could not be actual FOP members.. now in regard to the plates.. it scares me when i hear that someone is not running a plate and giving back good valid information i cringe.. if a plate is run on the 70 screen the VIN is not checked.. some vehicles are entered without plate info and a hit can only be recieved via a VIN check.. if a plate is run on the 69 screen, the plate, VIN and registered owner are all checked through LEADS and NCIC.. howeveer, only IL plates can be run on this screen.. IN plates can be a pain to run because the year of expiration is needed when running it.. thank you to IN for not making things simple.. i hope this info helps a little

The union issue will never be solved due to the fact that no one sticks together. It sometimes feels like the difference between 2nd watch and 3rd watch are worlds appart. Some people are just too preocupied with themselves to even start thinking about the next person. Lets just deal with what we have handle accordingly.

On your union issue, I would research labor law if I were you. How does your contract read on union business with the employee/affected member there should be a set aside if not something is seriously wrong. For the most part management can not interfere with official union business on company time, that's labor law. Check it out. There's a balancing factor and management might be violating you and as to your union they may even be in error. Nothing within the city surprises me, do your research within IL. Labor Law on union and employee rights. Your contract is your bargaining guide, trust this you can be tripped up if you don't know your true rights.

A question do you have a union steward or rep. and is someone present on any of the watches?

Can anyone in your organization make a call to the F.O.P. Lodge 7?
Thay are not the perfect ansewer but they are probably better then the union you have now.

You are correct, except that the reality is that when people do open their mouths and fight back....their seniority, their work environment, everything you can think of is messed with.

This is done because no one cares about your rights. You can do all this until one is blue and they just laugh at ya! Another truth is that there are ways around the law, ways around the guarantees of one's rights. The city uses them all.

So what are you saying, pay dues and do nothing? If the standards and clauses which reflect seniority in your contract are violated it's a discussion then a grievance, plain and simple. Seniority when referenced to a clause/article in a contract is one of the easier ones to deal with.

The mgmt. game of playing with you after or during the issue is another area and would depend on how your being violated. When you step up to the bat you have to be willing to follow the swing through, so know your contract. I know full well how the city and so called unions operate, but sometimes you have to hold their feet to the fire. I have been in full battle more than once. I would say I averaged 80% of wins. The loses were training for the wins. The scars fade away in time. Choose your battles wisely.
