Someone actually understands us?

We are in the process of looking for other police dispatch sites to network with, but alas, they are few and far between. We did, however, uncover a couple of interesting links. The first link approaches the topic of dispatcher stress, something that noone seems to understand except for dispatchers. From that link, we are tickled pink by the following quote and had to make sure we didn't write it (didn't realize people were still aware of the Peter Principle):
Ambitious people can advance to the highest level their incompetence will permit and then languish there making life miserable for their subordinates.

Strike a nerve?

The second link (from the same site) discusses issues that hit particularly close to home. We suggest you scroll to the dividing line and start reading there.

More to come, like the Tonight Show. Feel free to e-mail us with any pertinent links you may come across.

Some really great links there, thank you for finding them. Scary thing is I personally can relate to alot of article, esp when he talks about "creative napping" .

Yeah well, I work for an answering service as an Operator and dispatcher. We handle calls for doctors, lawyers, psych facilities, Stress hotlines, retail, lawyers, etc. and a whole multitude of others. Not only do we take calls, dispatch, etc. but we have strict instructions on what type of calls we can take, and NOT take, etc.

I'm not trying to compare it with what you do, but it's very close. This job is absolute HELL and complete torture. We are severely underpaid, and understaffed. The only thing that keeps my sanity are many of the people I work with and my Supervisors. We all hate the damn job but are very close. The management at this place is completely idiotic and they have no clue what it takes being on the phone.

In addition, the worst part is dealing with the public. The majority of people we deal with are complete a$$holes!!!!! Others, have NO common sense! Only in our positions we can't say what we would like to say.

Many calls are crap, that they should not be calling for, some are ones they should be calling 9-1-1. Others when we nicely explain the Client's instructions on why we cannot reach the person, I get cursed yelled, screamed, you name it.

I completely feel your pain and since working this job, have much more respect for what you do. Many dispatchers visit my police memorial over the years and I've heard the stories. But it's quite different when you're in the driver's seat and doing the job. I have 10 years of management and am used to multi-tasking, abuse, etc but this job doesn't remotely compare. Even worse are the whacked hours we work, the HOLIDAYS I work all the time, and I rarely get (2) days off together to refresh.

Right now I'm looking to get the HELL out of this job but the only offers I'm getting are way out in the N/NW burbs and I use public transportation.

So, yes I have more respect for you and think what you do is worse then being a cop on the street, only you don't have to worry about being shot at.

GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU

Off Topic:

Check your mail for a letter from the deferred compensation people......apparently a laptop computer containing members' info was stolen from one of their employee's homes over a year ago. I was dumbfounded that we are just learning about this from the company. Could this be a marketing ploy to get folks to sign up for the "protection from fraud" that is offered free for 1 year....I mean, what about after that first year? Do they automatically deduct a "fee" after that? I almost threw out the letter without opening it, thinking it was just more junk mail.

Also, I wanted to mention the IBEW newsletter I received yesterday with the small column about changes at the 911 center.....Jerry Rankins seems to have a whole lot of nice things to say regarding how well we are being treated with our new state-of-the-art kitchen (????HUH????) and our calming atrium with the comfy furniture. Is this guy for real? Has he jumped in bed with management? Way to go, Jerry! Now we can all see how well he "represents" us.

Let's have a post about the cost of our new monitors all 308 of them at $1200 a piece, and they don't even fit on our consoles!!!
Isn't this fancy, 6 inch stacks of misc x cards holding up the new $1200.00 monitors. Gotta love the rocket scientist that was allowed to spend 3.7 million without even looking at our consoles. Maybe next time they can go to Best Buy and purchase and only spend 1.5mil @ $500 a piece.

The 2 million they saved could be put in a money market account til 2013 and pay for our benefits.

Can they put $1000 aside to buy Raid Flying Insect Strips to hang at each console to catch all those nasty GNATS?
