Chicago Dispatchers

Our Fearless Leader.

Somewhat like what Batman said, "We've tried to avoid all this, but we can't." We decided at the beginning not to address this, but the public speaks.

We were reminded once again yesterday that concensus on the Ops Floor is that "the 'M' started with the promotion of M. Seems it all went downhill from there."

In a city of clout scandals and "who-you-know," we wonder why this person was rumored to have made racist comments during an on-the-floor argument with a co-worker while still a dispatcher; had one of the least personable attitudes that we personally remember out of co-workers; was promoted to floor supervisor for a short amount of time in spite of her record of medical abuse; functioned as Acting Watch Manager less than 5 times during her "tenure" as a floor supervisor; was promoted to Acting Deputy Director within a year of her supervisor promotion (and was the least senior floor supervisor at the time she was promoted to her current position); and, according to the consensus floating around the Floor, has single-handedly done more to destroy employee morale than any administration collectively has in the history of OEMC.

We'll let the comments say the rest. Keep it as clean as possible.

you must be joking..honest and hardworking? she's an evil, vindictive, arrogant, unfair witch. She hasn't done a single thing to improve anything that effects the operations floor personnel and in fact does all she can to screw people to the wall..i can only think that you made that comment simply to fire people up.

I hate her. It's that simple. There is absolutely nothing about that woman as a manager or as a person to like or respect. Her main goal is to make sure she stays where she is, making the money she is. Make no mistake about that. She will do whatever she has to do. She lies. She lies to them about what we really do and how we need to do it. That's why they have no idea because she is the one giving them the information. I hope she reads this because to end with I'd like to say. We CANT STAND YOU. There is nothing we'd like more than for you to leave.

Well on a real note, remember in your prayers today Mike from across the hall at Streets and Sans. You may have spoken to him by the parking lot doors, taking a drag off his cigarette. He was awol 2 days ago and yesterday never checked in to work. They contacted family, then did a forced entry to find Mike deceased, late 40's. Out of respect for his family let's leave the cause as unknown for now.
Sometimes you never know what burdens or depressions people carry that you see everyday. Sometimes the burden is just too much.
Let's not turn this blog into a bashing fest of one person, look at yourself in the mirror and thank the Good Lord it's not you. We don't have to like the person we work with, but we do need to remain civil, just out of respect for one another as a species. Let's not lower ourselves, but instead forgive the person for who they are. Life is too short.

Wow....it seems the problems in dispatch seem to be the same everywhere...and I'll bet the rules are mostly the same all over, especially regarding things like blogs, we lost a great calltaker and friend for farrrrrrr less than this blog - no government agency wants it's issues published and available to the media and the pubilc....if I can't convince you to stop blogging, I'd say you need to be even less specific than you already are and drop the thinly veiled personal attacks on supervisors..."those ppl who know ppl" ... trussssttt me, if they know ppl who can get them promoted without merit, they surely know ppl who can get you fired...just a friendly suggestion, dispatcher to dispatcher... xoxo

I knew mike...and i liked him..he was a nice guy...maybe now those people who made fun of him will feel bad...although unfortunately that won't bring him back
but mike knew the system and how management could be...and this thread is not about mike..
this is a forum for us to vent about the things and people at our job that make it difficult.
so if you don't want to blog or don't think other people should, don't read it. To the comment right above this one, did you even know mike? because he wasn't a call taker.
Furthermore, we don't care what this government agency wants. Especially whether or not they "want their problems" broadcast for the media and others to see. Just like they don't care about us.

There is nothing thinly veiled about any of this. If you don't want to read the truth, dont. With everything in the papers about Sorich's conviction and the patronage office, do you really think I (or most people) care who knows who. In fact, if I was one of the people at OEMC who had clout or a phone call, which I'm not, I'd be afraid. If not afraid, I'd definitely stop acting like an AS**OLE who can do/get/say whatever they want. Of which, she is definitely one of those people.

You are not going to make people feel bad about this blog and the things people say on it. To those of us who knew Mike, we feel horribly and will pray for him and his family. This blog has nothing to do with that. You obviously didn't even know him, if you think he was a call taker.

Sounds like 0650 isn't from our office or just a troll.
If anyone should watch anything, it's that trolls, reporters and others, who instead of doing real investigation will surf off of blogs.

WAKE UP! EVERYBODY KNOWS SOMEBODY IN THE CITY! WHO CARES??

P.O. from 008 is ok. Some realatively "minor" internal injuries and a bunch of cuts and bruises but should make a full recovery. He was very fortunate.

My prayers will be with Mike and family as well. 0535, you're right, you don't know what depression or burdens someone carries with them. The short tempered person, the quiet person, the funny clowning-around person, etc. This life is too short to hold grudges, or people bash, and especially too short to hate someone. Let's watch out for each other and always be available to encourage or just listen when someone seems troubled.

a quick synopsis of MK's tenure:
-elimnation of power watches
-increase in OT, esp mandatory OT
-no accountability for holding superviosry personnel to terms of contract, esp w regard to OT-both mandatory and voluntary
-increased resources devoted solely to employee investigations as opposed to policy and procedures of actual job
-blatant disregard for the finding of the investigations arm of OEMC in that chain of review has been distorted and overridden
-disregard for progressive discipline with a focus on punitive, rather than corrective, actions
-blatant disregard for contract provisions, esp w regard to internal movement of employees
-introduction of the concept of "sick no pay" CIs; "excessive absence" CI; and CIs for "patterns of absences" despite having no precedent nor definitions of same
-attempts to introduce an alternate work schedule which diminishes the full time status of civilian employees
-questionable and flawed promotions and hiring processes (this after having convinced City Hall to let OEMC oversee)
-failure to earn and maintain the respect, if not necessarily the liking, of her subordinate employees including supervisors and pcos
Given the circumstances of her promtion, her lack of management and people skills, and her lack of formal advanced education at the time of her appointment, its a miracle the place runs as well as it does. That is a credit to the working stiffs in the room, not to managment.

Omg... this is the anonymous who said you should be careful with ur blog. Im not in ur office and I wasnt referring to your friend mike (who it was said worked across the hall in streets n sans - see I can read unlike some of you apparently). It's always sad to lose a coworker when a member of your work family dies it is especially tragic, and I am very sorry or your loss, and the pain he must have been in... but what I was referring to is My AGENCY in CALIFORNIA fired a calltaker and friend of mine for a blog about his average and really boring personal life that occasionally included non specific work chatter. He wasn't attacking neone, or talkin smack , he just mentioned work and , pow, the county had him fired. just like that, and he didnt even have any enemies that im aware of. It's not that I dont like your blog so I should stop reading it, it's that I was concerned that trouble would find you more easily through your blog. That's all, just tryin to help. Jeez.

Well, if the city of Chicago had good leadership, then maybe numerous anonymous city employees wouldn't HAVE to have a blog focused on solving major issues.

Keep up the great work, CPD Dispatchers. I cannot even imagine doing your job...

I could give a sh** who knows who. Furthermore, it's already been proven by the SCC blog that the city has no way of knowing who writes the posts or the comments. Unless we are divulging information on specific calls the city has no right to limit our comments.
Plus you are all getting off the topic. This thread is about M. We all hate her (and that is actually not a strong enough word) and we all have reason to. Her main goal in that place is to keep us afraid, burnt out and depressed. If that isn't true, well then she needs to go back to the drawing board. She was a rude, inconsiderate and mean dispatcher and those characteristics still apply to her as a manager. Furthermore, she needs to realize that (a), it doesn't take a college diploma to be intelligent or educated. and (b) she isn't the only one there who has a degree.

Don't think they can't find out if they really wanted too. There are computer programs made for such that.
Powertripper is probably flattered by her ability to throw so many daggers and still have a whole blog dedicated to her.
"Look how powerful I am! "
We need a sincere apology from her. I'm sorry I've made some terrible choices when it came to elimating power watches and messing up your babysitting schedules and personal lives. I'm sorry I decided to play investigator and think I was smarter than the train retired coppers and sgts. I'm sorry I assisted in ruining the Corp Cadre's Christmas by having them suddenly end their tenor early, corraled and sent them off a week before Christmas. I'm sorry I didn't have the guts to defend my previous coworkers against tyrant big bosses and became the all out "yes man".
I'm sorry I berated you in the front of the room and spoke to you like a 5yo. I'm sorry I have to always let you know I'm more powerful than you and will do anything to make sure you don't ever forget it.

I'm not positive, but my guess would be that the aspects of her promotion are enough to get someone indicted. There are NO paper qualifications and no personal qualifications. There is no proper paper trail and no record of success once promoted. The very idea of jumping from dispatcher to her position in such a short and unexplained/unexplainanble period would make this sort of a slam dunk for the feds. So, who signed off on her promotion and retention?

Wondering as I and others often do, has mgmt. at OEMC/City taken to this blog and others in a process of sorting out with any concern the real issues raised? If so, will they be astute enough to utilize the valid information to move forward and initiate changes for improvement, in all day to day operations city wide.

My view this blog like SCC and others related to city issues started up and evolved in furtherance, as ironic as it may sound to some, as a another way to share in an attempt at assisting real progress and change in many areas. In that, through sharing/venting you thereby highlight the true meaning of what a quality employee/team player actually is, along with lying out where the negative factors are. It appears the blogs are not just being used as a gripe trash whine zone sometimes in need of wash/flush, even though they sometime appear to be. It also makes the frustrations and venting non-solo. Lending a truer voice to the urgent issues at hand.

If employee's and city departments are as important as the city states and advertises. In order to show and affect positive change in any operating equipment, procedures along with providing good services with the importance of safety for all, including our citizens. A good management team would and should heed direction from those with first hand operating knowledge. "No I'm not dreaming!" As this is exactly what a good management team would and should do. and yes, it amounts to more than just ink on paper.

Employee's do find it difficult to bring the issues face to face or on paper. The reason is directly related to all the city players which unfortunately are many and their unending ability to react through attack, while teaming up in a negative factor. This is common knowledge and only adds fuel to the city departments to continually cycle through with a guarantee of disorganization and disorder while affording chaos to the employees and a waste of the tax payers dollar.

It is also unfortunate that employee's have the inability to trust the tag of Trust In Reporting through anonymity. Which the city has been more readily espousing through the new 800#. It's almost like trust in the suggestion box, or trust in being required to give your name as an employee to the Superintendent of Police at an open meeting of your peers, which was also initiated and unsuccessful. (Trust is hard to come by in the city all due to the above factors and more.) Sad but supported by many employed by the city. Nothing is considered confidential, nothing. Your left to blogging a cry for help and a unity hoping for change.

It has already been demonstrated on this new blog, bring up a valid issue and someone will jump in and not only defend the improper conduct but the individual as well. Thrusting good employees to appear as only whiners instead of dedicated achievers. Being, Whine is the current buzz word being used by the media framers of late or the quit if you don't like it. Which is often used in a format for dismissing need for change and often used in an aggressive attack call to end all ploy.

Issues already raised here:

Parking/Stickers/Interior, exterior Security manpower honored procedures and equipment.

Faulty poorly maintained computer equipment, broken down furniture at consoles and throughout call centers and other units.

Rotation of dispatchers and call takers, training and forced overtime, misuse or poor use of manpower. Throughout city departments.

TMA's conduct, lack of supervision, failure to obtain, display and produce city identification, security provisions.

Questionable use of Federal funds. Or the question, where does Homeland Security grants actually go pertaining to OEMC. How much is actually going to OEMC for internal operational costs. If so what does it cover, equipment, security, etc. Are the above concerns even included in the actual grant package.

Promoted individuals, were proper measures taken was OEMC/City in compliance or is it merit or clout. Whose accountable, how has it affected morale and working conditions through out the city.

Detailed individuals is the procedure of upholding policy and contracts being honored. Whose accountable. City, and or Union/Employee issue, Merit, Clout moral again.

Standard Operating procedures or SOP and OEMC directives, memos. what should be adhered too, what's unreliable.

All in all, the above is a valid list of honest open questions already produced here in a short time.

What would a productive and good management team do to help in affecting positive growth for the agency with this valuable foresight, while embracing the dedicated anonymous employee in an unbiased productive manner? Or will they, who ever they are continue to be reactive, punitive in an indifferent and negative manner.

The city cycle thus far has not been a positive one. Will the employees actually share in any possible progress with the city and OEMC while seeking a mere positive change? A good management team would find all this a positive welcoming challenge.

You have reached out as dedicated employees and for what it's worth I applaud you. Many are not just so called whiners but true winners. You ask only to assist OEMC and the city move forward. You strive as achievers the foundation to which change through trust is built upon. Shall true leaders ever step forward we will be there to assist them. They need merely to remain open, come forward and seek.

Unbeknowing to alot of you, you have brothers and sisters out there who work under the same department- we are the OEMC/OCC or vise versa. Actually, Renee's not affiliated with any legitimate police memorial. She "runs" a police groupie site which must make her feel very important because she feels quite free to stalk Gold Star Family members and tries to ingratiate herself with them and other members of the Dept based upon her non-existant Memorial. Total police groupie who has no connection with either the City of Chicago or the Chicago Police Dept, except possibly by injection a la some drunken copper she picked up in a tavern one night. Best advice, stay away from this hater!!!!!
