Power Watches shall return

Posted today in the CO book was notice that the Power watches will be re-implemented. New watch bids will take place within what we assume to be the next month.

There's a lot of joy going around the floor, mainly because of the four consecutive 3-day weekends that come with being on Power. We haven't heard where any recalls, though, the fact that we earn 8 hours of medical time at the beginning of every month, but if you hit medical on a Power watch you have to use TEN hours. But we won't concern ourselves with that now.

We'll concern ourselves with the facts that this is sure to cut down on mandatory overtime, and the Deputy Director is actually listening to our opinions and trying to right some of the morale-draining, operations-ruining wrongs of his predecessor.

Damn straight they should be listening to you. What a TOUGH JOB

You have to play detective on the phone with some of these people, others screaming at you, etc. Answering phones like you're the late Barbaro and before you know it, 5 hours has gone by. Working EVERY weekend, holiday and crappy hours. Dry eye and MIGRAINES all the time.

Good luck and keep fighting!!

They are reimplementing the power watches this year ?? Or for the 2008 calendar year ?

Have they mentioned the hours yet ? Same as before? 0730-1800 and 1730-0400? How about moving the times? Any talk of this?

what the talk about cashing out our comp time again...anything over 40 hours? is that all the time or just like before a one time thing.

Union rep days, said cash out hours over 240! Translation means the hours that appear on the top line (if you get a print out from office). This has never been cashed out before as they (payroll dept) have never let anyone carry over the allowed 240 (ie, if you reached the max , turned an ot slip marked "pay me comp time" it would have automatically been changed to "pay you in cash"). So many employees got fed up & complained to Cesar (former head of payroll) that "changing of the pink slip" was stopped. So..... now you have some major ot getters that decided to keep their names out of the newspapers (for making so much money in ot) that they now take it in comp time! Result ....maybe having well over 1000 hrs! That would surely cause a red flag to wave hello to city hall! Didn't we just hear recently that they were doing an audit at OEMC?

Everybody can relax .......you will not be deleted of precious comp hours needed for furlos, etc. For those lucky enough to have OVER 240 hours.........you will only get cashed out for the excess.....you will keep 240 on the books.

The 40 hr hold over at year end is for the 2nd line of comp which represents the comp time you earn for holiday not worked (ie, rdo). That's what has been cashed out & paid on the 16DEC check these past few years.

Life's too short...stop & smell the roses, petunias, gardenias, sunflowers, and let a smile be your umbrella in the thunderstorms of stress at the O E M C ! ! !

Thanks for the clarification, as well as the positive perspective! That can be hard to find sometimes around here. I won't worry about writing a TO - FROM now to keep my 100 hours on the first line for my furlough coming up.

Well that's not what the head of our payroll dept told me today on the telephone. He told me "all" including non flsa was being cashed out to a bank of 40 hours period. He was warned we weren't going to receive it well by management, says every quarter they are going to cash out everything over 40hrs. Then they are going to keep track of time not used in a year from a clean slate. He didn't quite realize why we all care so much about it. Esp that we were denied time so often and didn't get paid. I explained to him that it is a safety net to back up our medical, to take a day off to be with out families, to fill in our furlough gaps, etc. He said he didn't see evidence of us capping off our flsa time in January in the past years. (past mgt has been doing) Stated it was legal for them to touch our non flsa time. (Which I disagree with, and believe I'm correct.) Therefore I've been playing phone tag state wide to find the correct answer. Per the Federal Dept of Wages and Hours we are allowed as assistants to first responders 480 hrs on the books, all other non essential staff is allowed 240 .
In conversation it was mentioned our extreme manpower shortage and how we are 150 bodies short. He said they are slated to hire 90pcos and additional 90 pcos the following year.
There was a test given out in May.

90 + 90 = 180 more employees. YEAH RIGHT!

Only more proof that the jokes we have working in our payroll department have no clue what they are doing!! Who is it that hires and gives authority over OUR wages and comp time to these fuckers??? TOM KOSTOVICH WHERE ARE YOU???????????????

It is absolutely asinine that payroll even BELIEVES that they have the right to touch any of our comp time. Aren't there stipulations in our union contract and state guidelines that regulate how much comp time we can earn and keep on the books? This is just another case of this corrupt city administration doing whatever the fuck they want to do with blatant disregard for the law and what is right. And WE had to take a fucking ETHICS test?!@# How ironic is that???

CHICAGO: THE MOST CORRUPT CITY IN THE MOST CORRUPT COUNTY IN THE MOST CORRUPT STATE IN THE NATION

I can't wait to get the fuck out of here and move to Arizona.

Hey, back to the original topic: power watches returning!!

Another positive to the power watches returning is that with several employees now having staggered starting times, the parking lot crunch may ease up a little bit. Not as many people arriving to work at the same time will be a blessing. Now if we could just get rid of those traffic management vehicles, we'd be golden!!

I just wish management would let us know how many spots are going to be available for each power watch. The old call taker power watch had only 14 people assigned to it, which really was not sufficent. Two people in each day off group meant that with 6 people on RDO, and at least 1 person on furlough at any given time, there were only 7 people left scheduled to work each day. Then when you throw in the 2-3 people who hit the medical every day, you are down to 4-5 available to work. That is not much coverage if you ask me. Hopefully they will put more people on that watch this time around.

payroll is going by the contract... apparently there is a stipulation in there that says they can pay out your time every 60 days... no more than 40 hours of any type of comp time on the books

Off Topic -
From the Daily Southtown:
Several anonymous posts on a local police blog say the first officer to arrive was a patrolman on special assignment in the Gresham District who got a phone call from a family member at the scene, pleading for help because no police were there.

New post on the Durkin Park issue as soon as we get all of our ducks in a row.

Names/initials of the accused will not be used.

Details of the actual incident/ investigation will not be disclosed. There's enough of a bind for those individuals without their identities being plastered on the Internet. Fair enough?
