Disarray on Days

What is going on with the 2nd watch? The watch manager, a relatively recent appointment and the least senior titleholder of that rank, appears to be running amok. No sooner was this watch manager assigned to a permanent watch (at the expense of a more seasoned watch manager who has been relegated to the relief position) did the wm begin with changes to long established 2nd watch practices. Long established practices that actually worked for that watch which is comprised primarily of old timers and long time veterans who for the most part know the job, know eachother, and know whats up.

But apparently this new wm felt the need to shake things up a bit, which is not necessarily a bad thing if it ultimately results in some positive changes for most everyone. However, that does not appear to be the case here as most of the changes that have been instituted have resulted only in demoralizing the workforce and creating instability on the floor. Hiring pcos back for overtime for only 2 hours on rdos (not worth the time, effort, or gas to bother coming down for), meddling with the assignment sheets, and soliciting day off group changes from partners on zones/citywides are a few examples. Rotating calltakers from their long time regular consoles while stating that calltakers "have to earn their spot" and pushing "efficiencies" (such efficiences have never been defined)front and center are more examples of the petty politicking taking place on this watch. But perhaps the most egregious is the wm attempts to implement change on days was to curtail furloughs via wholesale denials of the 5 day extensions that have been enjoyed by pcos for years. WTF??

Thankfully, someone on high had the good sense to reign in this wm on that last point and rescind that edict, but for the most part the rest of these attempts to change the watch are going unchecked. And to what end? It isn't clear what the wm is hoping to achieve by these methods and no objectives for doing them were ever clearly articulated. Sure there were some issues on days, but for the most part, it works and the day watch did not need to be "saved", "rescued" or "cleaned up". From the point of view of the working stiffs (read pcos) subject to these things, it looks like a clear case of ego and power tripping. Payback even to some pcos for slights--real or imagined--in years past. Recall one of the first, and best, tenets of good management: just because one can do something does not mean one should do something. Big, big difference.

And memo to the suits, if any read this: next time a wm, any of them, attempt to implement wholesale change to established past practices, ala the furlough extension memo that went into the co book and was later rescinded, it would be save alot of embarrassement, backtracking, and confusion if such changes were consistent among all watches and applied equally to everyone. Memo to the 2nd watch manager, if this is being read: renegading at the expense of the pcos on this watch will not win you brownie points with superiors or subordinates. The problems at oemc were not created by the wm and they will not be solved by the wm, however good are the intentions. There is a reason that the 2nd watch wm predecessors did not do the things that are being attempted now and perhaps some reflection on that would be beneficial.

Does anyone have any information regarding the "in-service" training PCO I's and PCO II's are being scheduled to attend? I've heard a few horror stories and I am wondering what the real scoop is.

How horrible can it really be? Besides having to leave your house at 0630 hours to get to work by 0800?
They can't fire you over in house service training, maybe bore you to death (high probability).
What's there to teach,, here's the rules, next week we will change the rules. Teach us that over the years each set of new dispatchers was taught different rules, to maintain chaos, friction and tension amongst the blue shirts. We haven't had an sop to guide us written in well over 6 years! Yes bring on the inservice training. Scary.

The problem on days can be summed up in two letters...KB. She's a know nothing on a power trip.

I find it amazing that some of the Day crew is so outraged at our new Watch Manager. Let's see for years the old timers have done very little but get paid the most. They always say I put my time in and I can do what I want. Umm, at what year of service are you no longer required to pull your own weight? I am a call taker with almost ten years of service. I have seen both the call takers and dispatchers that walk all day. I've seen the ones on their cell phones all day long. I've also noticed the ones who are always late for roll call. Have they ever been held accountable? I've even seen one blatantly disrespect 2 supervisors. No reprimand at all. When Kathy shared her views about the watch I was gratified. Finally, someone wasn't afraid to speak the truth. We've gotten away with alot of non work people. You couldn't do such lackluster work in any other workplace and still expect to have a job. As for Kathy being on a power trip, PLEASE!!! She realized along time ago the only one who could get her fired for not doing her job was herself. I respect the fact she's the only Watch Manager who doesn't play favorites. All she asks is that you do the job you are getting paid to do. Now I am not perfect and don't claim to be. However, I know I was slipping because I let the malaise of my other co workers infect me. Kathy shook me up and now I am more aware of my failings. The citizens of Chicago deserve our best not our least.

You were made aware of you FAILINGS?!!? After 10 years of service !?!?!
I'm really hoping at this point
that KB really did write that and not some abused calltaker that needs help.
This is something a wife beater says to his old lady after smacking her around.
"Gee dear I'm sorry about the beating but someone had to make you aware of your FAILINGS."
"Thank you dear, I don't know what I would do without you."

Its about time someone came in on 2nd watch and let those with the most senority realize they are not priviliged because the got some time in. If you dont like the changes RETIRE, most of you couldnt make it thur the summer on 3rd watch, Also we're tired of hearing about the old room, nobody cares about how things were 10 to 15 years ago, Be like the old room and disappear.

I am the one who wrote the 21feb 2045 post. No it was not written by Kathy, but by someone who's worked with her for years. When I say my failings I mean how I haven't been performing to the level I once did. And even with that statement, I am still among the top PCO1 in terms of calls taken and having never been served with a CI. I let complacency take over. I forgot even though the callers aren't the most cooperative people in the world, they need help. I let the hypocrisy of this bureaucracy permeate my being. I channeled the wanton disrespect that our numerous Directors bestowed upon us to the citizens with my lackadaisical performance. Recently CC said in roll call he's planning on getting a petition or something to voice the displeasure with Kathy Brown's implementations. He's just mad he can't get his back seat and talk on his cell phone all day. He actually has to earn the $72,000/yr salary for a change.

I guess supervisors can sleep with call takers or dispatchers. Just can't get them pregnant.

WOW! Do you dislike this person so much as to make such a rude comment like that? We don't work with thousands of coworkers, just a couple hundred.
Please stop. People have enough on their plate, show a coworker a little love will ya? I'm not referring to the shirt either!
Don't we have it bad enough, with
a bad 4th floor, bad press interviews, citizens blaming us for thier f'd up lives, must we now shred our coworkers on the ops floor? I thought I worked with adults, apparently not.

That post didn't sound to me like a slam on the affected supervisor, who has been unfairly accused, judged and sentenced based on unsubstantiated rumor and innuendo. I thought 24 Feb 1000 was just making an observation about the fact that there have been several other instances of office-romances where the two parties involved have NOT been forced to work on different watches (I can think of two examples right off the top of my head, both involving a supervisor and a PCO). The bottom line is, RS is just trying to F*CK with him!!

It's part of the rumor going around about someone being pregnant that is so disheartening. So very unfair to that woman. No one knows her circumstances, love, health, home life but her, and it's her business. This is real life, with real families involved, not a reality tv show.
Supervisors are allowed to be in dating relationships with pco1-2's
but they must notify the 4th floor about it. There were obvious relationships over the years and some not so obvious, but if they followed the rules there is nothing you can do about it. Supervisors when they took the job, knew they were going to be at the mercy of the fourth floor and until their union gets on their feet there isn't a thing that person can do about it. (at least not without a good lawyer)

Who gives a s**t if they have a relationship or not? Why all the damn soap opera drama? Leave them the hell alone and get back to the subject of the Big Brown Idiot.
