Chicago Dispatchers

Durkin Park, Part 2, or maybe 3.

We'd like to entertain the topic of how the dispatchers were served. One of them reported for work, and was told to turn in her work IDs, her headset, and even her parking sticker. As far as we know, the other one still hasn't been served. Rumor has it that they were to be served at their homes, but a cooler head or two allegedly prevailed and decided that wasn't the best option (although it did happen to a former employee around the beginning of the M.K. reign.

So, opinions on that, please. Try to keep it from turning into a mud-fest like the last thread. Although we must admit, we appreciate the fact that noone attempted to name the dispatchers/supervisors under investigation.

Why didnt her union rep call her at home and advise her of what was going on? Since everyone knew what was going to happen. Or one of her co-workers?

Having been a detective and monitoring Zone 6 I know how crazy it can be, especially with multiple scenes going at once. My thoughts are with the dispatchers...They are being held accountable for issues at OEMC and CPD that won't be addressed.

I have worked in several districts and units and although there are some that make you shiver when you hear them, my hat off to the majority in my opinion....CM leave the office and come back where you belong, looking out for us on the street. Zone 3, 6, 13, 1, CW1 and CW6 1st watch Thank you.... A friend who can't stay out of trouble

How unprofessional was it for the 1st watch union rep to come to the 2nd watch rollcall and tell us to shut up and stop critizing the dispatchers under investigation. Well no one was doing that, Which union rep showed up for the meeting at Durkin Park?, not a single one, but there were 2nd watch dispatchers there standing up for them, So 1st watch union rep why dont you shut up and waddle back to 1st watch and go back to sleep

lets keep our sisters in our prayers... i hope that they have no intentions of letting it end here ...i hope they have it in them to fight this to the end.which means getting their own private attorneys. because i highly doubt that jerry rankins or anyone else from the sucky ass union we have is going up to bat for them on this. we should all start taking up a collection to help out with their attorney fees. we need to let these 2 dispatchers know that they are not alone...because the truth is fellow coworkers one day it may be one of us...

Let's look at the real problem here. Having been an officer for over 20 years, I have never seen such low manpower on the watches in each district. It was unheard of to have 10-99 units working on midnights, and then they had to sign waivers to protect the city in case anything happened to them. Now it is COMMON to see 10-99 units responding to disturbance calls....Where is the manpower??? Where is the Union on this safety issue for our officers?

The dispatchers were not to blame... who do you assign a job to if all cars are already on assignments? You dispatchers are just being made the scrapegoat in all of this hoopla.

I hope the truth comes out and those dispatchers are brought back. To the rest of you dispatchers, Thank you for doing what you do.

the city has no one to blame for the issue at durkin park.they made the idea of caps as the end all be all of evryones problems. i.e. you can not control your eight year old call the police, you have a dispute with your neighobor, call the police. so the city has told the minority community that we are the answer to all your problems so any problem you have call the police. when i say minority community ,how many calls do you get in the minority community of "my 13 year old is out of control", "im too lazy to check on my family member so have the police do it". i bet several. the way we can get better man power issue is someone have the balls to say that if your 13 year old is out of control,be a better parent!.if you want to check on your family member, get off your ass and do it yourself. if you have a dispute with your family member be a grown adult and handle it. if someone would have the balls to the tell these people that you need to grow up ,be an adult and handle your own life,so the police could go back to deal with criminal matters. i know the city would never do this because these politicians and "revs" get their power base from keeping certain members of the community poor and dependant on them. just a thought of course.

why does it have to be the minority community? We get those same calls from those of you in the white community also. Stop being racist, that's the real problem.

Its not CAPS that started the policy of taking all complaints. That was O.W. Wilson of the University of California. He was brought in by Daley I in response to the Summerdale (modern day 020) scandal which had midnight coppers doing business burglaries using the squad cars.

The thing is, back then there were at least as many dirty coppers (as a percentage) as there are today. Trust me, I'm not throwing mud blindly. Grandpapy was a copper in the forerunner of 004, and he told us the stories.

When O.W. put all kinds of coppers in cars, and started the policy of telling the public to call 9-1-1 for everything, it was done largely as a way of driving accountability. Wouldn't want coppers driving around aimlessly with nothing do do, would ya?

The truth of this is borne out partly in the afternoon editions of the Chicago papers reporting the Family Secrets testimony of Siegel. His view (and sort of the conventional view) is that back in the 50s and 60s, the department was thorougly corrupted and corruptible.

I know, I know, this would be where Sgt. Northern (ret) would come and damn me to hell on SCC, but its the truth.

So they put these guys in cars and had em responding all day and all night to the squeakiest wheels (as you describe the multitude or idiotic calls). They lose sight of the neighborhoods, the people who aren't calling, and some other important stuff.

In theory, CAPS was supposed to get the patrol division back in touch with the neighborhoods, and a bit away from the 9-1-1 driven department. Same thing with TRU, SOS and some of the other pre-emptive units.

Bottom line is that I agree with the tenor of your post. Just wanted to point out that its not CAPS generically to blame. Its the 9-1-1 policies since day one in Chicago which are to blame. They tried turning the police into social workers, babysitters, insurance investigators, plumbers, electricians, auto repairment, typists and everything but the protectors of law and order. And it wasn't no accident.

Until they rethink the foundations of the policity upon which 9-1-1 was built (i.e., send the police to wherever a squeaky wheel demands their presence), the dangers of Durkin Park (i.e., no police avaiable) will always be present.

Sorry for the rant!

25 july 2007: 17:07....its not being racist its a fact.i bet every dollar i have that if you would compare the numbers of the amount of domestic calls in the minority community of "my 16 year old is being disrespectful." "my daughter is wild and out of control" or the ever famous my son is calling me b's and h's i want him gone . i bet the odds are ten to one. i also want to ask you a question ? why is it in the minority community there is such a huge percentage of the men who are so absent in their childs life that grandma has to raise the young man and when the young man is so out of control the police have to be called to be a substitue father? i am not saying it does not happen in the non minority communities but lets be honest in certain communities its a hell of a lot greater percentage. i know you think this is a racist thought but thats your opinion and i respect it. maybe these parents should go back to the old days of beating your childs ass when they get out of line and stop being their kids buddy and instead be a parent. if the parents start doing that i guarantee it will be like the old days where the police were not called in family business and they were allowed to do what the police do,"catch criminals"

your a RACIST and you dont even know it. I'd rather send the police to the 16 year old fighting with mom then the yuppie who go up and down the block checking for city stickers and expired plates cause he cant park right in front of his condo, which he thinks he is entitiled to do.

Whether the previous poster is racist or not isn't the point. The point is that we need to clean up our house and take care of our families without having the Police involved. I may not have liked Bill Cosby airing our community's dirty laundry, but the man was right.
If we take can make our community a place where the worst thing to worry about is city stickers and expired plates, then we have taken away ammunition from the racists.

You are a big part of the overall problem. Its much easier to just cry racist then it is to actually deal with any problems. Anyone who works as a P.O. or dispatcher knows the gross amount of B.S. "fix everything in my life" calls that come from certain communities. You cant fix a problem unless you identify its origin. And just because the problem occurs primarily in these communities doesn’t make someone a racist for bringing it up. While there isn’t much we can do about how these communities live their lives (im sure you would continue to cry racist if anyone tried), there is something we can do about how the call takers prioritize and take calls. Those calls are taking up the limited resources we have. This leads to backlogs and less police available to handle real situations that arise. The durkin park incident is just bringing this into the public light. Nothing is going to be solved unless the city addresses the issue of manpower and does something about the nonsense calls that are taken.
But go ahead and bury your head in the sand, continue throwing around claims of racism, and hope everything just fixes itself. And the city will hang the dispatchers out to dry as a scapegoat without addressing any of the real problems. And in the end, as in true city fashion, nothing will be solved.

are you going to come to my defense the day i decide or feel that a certain call isnt a so called "police matter".. and they call to beef on me because i didnt make an event for their call.????are you going to take my ci number and serve my suspension ?!?!?!? who died and made you dispatchers think that you are so much better than the calltakers ...why do you dispatchers feel so superior to the calltakers....?!?!?!?

the bottom line is we get just as many stupid ass dumb calls from all over the city ..granted they may be different types of complaints or issues that our "wonderful citizens" call to complain about but any way you look at it alot of these calls are senseless and are not anywhere near being a police matter.

Maybe you misunderstood my post as blaming the call takers, relax, that was not my intention. But the call takers should have some discretion as to taking calls. They currently do not. Following the current guidelines checking on some relative that hasn’t been heard from in months is a priority 1 job. That makes no sense at all. There needs to be someway to filter the calls and the best place to do that is at the call taker level. With some additional training they could be indemnified by the city for their decisions. My point with taking the calls is that you should be able to tell if it isn’t a police matter, and you should be backed for your decision.

Now, to: go to hell with your so called comments in regards to "certain communities "!!!!!!!grow the f*** up....

Maybe you should take your own advice. I thought I clearly related that while the majority of the calls come from the communities that were pointed out by previous "so called comments" (LOL), there isn’t much that can be done about how people live their lives. But you are certainly not going to solve anything by ignoring it or just dismissing it as racist.

Let's face this Durkin Park shit all boils to the following things...

#1 - Not enough police
#2 - Too many bullshit calls that are not even police matters. The city is just too afraid of getting sued over someone not getting service for a dog off a leash
#3 - The area around Durkin Park is fairly quiet. It is practically suburban considering it's borders are Burbank, Oak Lawn, and Hometown. The citizens of that neighborhood are not used to what other areas of the 008 district and the city experience each day which is slow police service!

The only people that are really to blame for this fiasco are the offenders themselves and the big wigs in city hall who turn a blind eye to this growing police shortage problem. Let's face it they don't give a shit about us and the "Average Joe." They only care about getting re-elected. We need to stand together and let them know that this shit is unacceptable. No matter where you live in the city regardless of status or background we all deserve efficient police service. They need to stop pissing away our tax dollars and put them into public safety. We need to stop bickering amongst ourselves and expose this mockery of a system to the public. The city has no problem dragging us through the mud. It's about time we throw them in the dirt and let them try to clean the filth out from under their nails.

I am NOT A DISPATCHER, BUT I STUMBLED ON THIS LUDACRIS BS THREAD AND i AM SORRY THAT YOU THE DISPATCHERS WERE CHARGED FOR THE BS THAT WENT ON MY COMMUNITY AND I for one do not blame you at all! District 008 does not have enough officers and the district is too damn BIG!!! And to the RACIST that made the comment about minorities and their household issues, let me tell you the FIASCO in DURKIN PARK WOULD NOT HAVE OCCURRED IF THE NON-MINORITY CITY OF CHICAGO EMPLOYEES WHO KIDS IT WAS (BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW THAT) WHO IS NOT A MINORITY HAD BEEN TAKING CARE OF THEIR BUSINESS IN THEIR DAMN HOUSEHOLD. THIS TIME THEY COULD NOT GET THE POLICE OR MAYOR DALEY TO COSIGN ON THEIR BS BECAUSE THE MINORITY THAT THEY ATTACKED FIRST WHO GOT NO POLICE RESPONSE ON HIS PHONE CALL TO 911 WAS NOT EVEN FROM CHICAGO HE WAS VISITING!!! AND WHAT NO ONE HAS TOLD IN ALL THIS CONVERSATION THE NON-MINORITIES WAS LOOKING FOR SOME OTHER MINORITIES WHO HAD BY-RIGHT KICKED THEIR ASSES EARLIER THAT DAY BECAUSE THE NON-MINORITIES WAS GANG BANGING AND THEIR PARENTS WORK FOR THE POLICE DEPT. AND THE FIRE DEPT AND THE 911 CENTER IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO AND THEY WERE PISSED BECAUSE FOR THE FIRST TIME THE MAYOR AND ALL HIS HOMEBOYS BACKED THE MINORITY BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT JUSTIFY THE MADNESS WHEN THE BOY WAS NOT EVEN FROM HERE IS WAS VISITING FROM MISSISIPPI!!! NOW AGAIN I APOLOGIZE FOR THE BLAME YOU GUYS HAVE TAKEN BECAUSE IT IS NOT FAIR BUT DON'T BE POINTING NO DAMN FINGERS ON COMMUNITIES WHEN YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE ALL THE DAMN FACTS YOU TOOK A CALL AFTER ALL THE SH-T WENT DOWN!!!
