OEMC Morale

The holidays are upon us, with one of the busiest nights of the entire year, right around the corner (New Year's Eve). Yet during this time of celebration and joy, something is missing in OEMC. There is no sense of spirit, brotherhood, or pride associated with taking 911 calls or dispatching. In short, our morale has long since departed the building right along with the long lost, lamented Motorola holiday dinner we used to enjoy.

The reasons for the lack of morale are obvious and have been evident for a long time: lack of supervision and accountability, overall lowering of job performance standards, mismanagment and lack of understanding about operations and communications by top tier political appointees, clout promotions and apppointments, and rife incompetence that goes unchallenged and unchecked.
Inconsistent, capricious, and arbitrary disicpline for alleged infractions have also killed morale.

Sadly, Blogmaster know though that the pcos also contibute to it when they are continually tardy, fail to adhere to uniform standards, take endless smoke breaks every hour, conduct foot patrol every hour, sleep while on duty, are just lazy, or bring alot of personal drama to the operations floor.

It is a classic case of chicken and egg: is the operations floor so "bad" because they are poorly managed or is management indifferent because pcos are "bad" and are protected by a union, thus not worth their efforts and resources? Makes one wonder.

I totally agree with your assessment of the morale on the floor. We couldn't get anyone interested in doing a dinner for Thanksgiving and it looks like it will be the same for Christmas. The bosses don't care if anyone works or not - they're afraid to discipline anyone, midnights being especially horrible, There will be no grab bag this year and as you said, no joy. When you work holidays it seems as if you say to yourself, why bother, even though we all knew that working holidays was part of the deal.
It appears that in years past there was always someone who would pick up the torch, organize the dinner and the grab bag and make us all have a nice time whether we wanted to or not. The reality of our situatiion is that we still have each other and we are not alone driving around the city in a 10-99 squad car or, for many of us alone at home. We have each other and maybe that can bring some happiness to those of us who are working all the holidays.
Happy holidays to all and perk up
maybe you'll be off next year.

maybe morale is so low because the same people come in on the holidays to work and the same people call in sick on the holidays and nothing gets done to them......i would love to be with my husband, kids, family on the holidays but i understand that in order for me to be off when my time comes around i have to work so that the others can be off on their time........this makes me sick and i really wish that they could think of some way to punish people who abuse their sick time on holidays.

You are right ! Nothing happens to those of us who call in sick on the Holidays - SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
knowing that why complain ? If you have a sick day you are entitled to use it - maybe you are sick on Christmas or maybe you are just sick of people complaining about others being sick !
Mind your own business

The only problem with people calling in when they are not sick is that it affects those of us who do use the system honestly. No judging meant in that statement, just the plain truth of the matter.

You call in sick because you want to go to a party or have dinner with a friend or go out of town. I don't get the day off that I put in for a long time ago. Or I have to work my lunch. Or I am forced to work o.t. Your advice may be to abuse the system also if I really need a day off. But I don't want to cause another coworker the same grief I don't like suffering myself.

I know morale is low and people feel they have no choice but to say , "Whatever, I'm just going to do what I have to do." Just so it's clear that it does affect your coworkers.

Well first i'd like to say Happy Holidays from a street erchen..myself. Second, you really have to be thankful for having a decent job. You're not going to get rich, but it's a respectful job nonetheless. Unlike us street erchen's, you sit in a comfortable building, away from the snow, rain or ice and sometimes make more than us on the street. You don't have to face the dangers of the streets, but just put up with management bullshit as a trade-off. Then again, that same management style is all around. So as you're sitting around feeling sorry for yourself, take a good look around, be thankful you woke up this morning (think of all the UCR 5084's), not slipping down stairs, or looking at dead babies, and feel good. Benefits aren't the best, but by no means the worse. If you get sick, you can go to your doctor unlike many others. You're not facing lay-offs or wondering how you're going to feed the family. So, get together and laugh about all the nonsense you face daily..like we do. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and put a smile on your face as it could be much worse. Bring in a dish on Christmas, toast each other on New Years Eve and stick together, because that's all you have down there!!!

As a P.O. for 16 years, I can imagine how low dispatcher's morale is, if you have to put up with the same shit we do. I just want to say you guys (and girls) do a great job. Keep up the good work and hang in there. Happy Holidays!

We don't begrudge anyone who calls in sick on a holiday because he or she is legitimately sick (although it's a bit odd that generally noone's ever just *too* sick to work on holidays other than two at the beginning of January and July, and two at the end of November and December).

But [showing up for the job you signed up for knowing that you'd have to work holidays that your coworkers happen to have off] is to [calling off sick on those holidays because for some reason you're more *entitled* to have them off than everyone else is]...

As [having a decent enough work ethic to take more than 50 calls a shift] is to [saying "Fuck everyone else, they can do my job FOR me."

To whomever wants to hit the medical on Christmas. Go for it!!
I'll be there working and that is ok.The building is not going to collaspe if you hit the medical. Enjoy your holiday or lay in bed with some good meds. I have been dealt with a decent hand when it comes to my health, with a few occasions where I had to liquidate all I had on the books. That being said and learning my lesson the hard way, I cannot hit the medical for anything else but illness, and I'm jealous of those who can :) Love you all! Merry Christmas to my
fine coworkers and police officers out there!

How about this...........Morale is down because we are being treated like were children. Evary day were in RC they restrict us from doing something new. No reading , no games, no fundraising messages, next we won't be able to talk to the person next to us, or we will get scheduled bathroom breaks. Taking everything away isnt gonna raise Morale. We need to keep our minds working, especially during the slower season. Everyone keep flexin your muscles. Let's see how low we can go. HO Ho HO!!!!!!!! Happy Frickin Holidays.
