Overtime Payments

Blogmaster is back. After a short hiatus to attend to some pressing matters, Blogmaster can now say the posts will regularly resume. Thank you to everyone who missed us: we appreciate it and appreciate the patience.

Blogmaster is truly sorry to all of those pcos who were recently affected by the city snafu which resulted in non payment of overtime for one week in December. For those who diligently pay attention to pip dates, count the hours up, and plan for use of funds, this was no small matter. Allegedly it was a city wide problem affecting all city departments, but that is little consolation to those who were COUNTING on that money. Adding insult to injury is the fact that no one appeared able to a)adequately explain WHAT happened and WHY it happened (so that steps may be taken to prevent future occurrences) b) adequately advise when restitution would be made--a memo in the co book dated 16 january, by DD Simmons, indicated that payments would be made on check of 01Feb while a union steward forwarded information directly from the 4th floor which indicated separate checks would be cut well in advance of that date and c) no one appears to be accountable for this.

This is no small screw up. It's true that no one died, no life or property damaged, and very likely the money will be there by the next check. But given that pcos--and almost every other lower rung schmuck working for the city--are held to high standards with regard to job performance (ask some of the pcos who have been given days for any number of alleged transgressions often without appropriate due process nor within context of contract and work history) its truly amazing that the city and the 4th floor are silent on this. It is the silence that is so offensive and so deafening. But then, the suits may just be biding their time waiting to see which hack they can use as a fall guy.

I was one of many expecting that extra money on my check on the 16th. So, ok, it wasn't included! Mistakes happen ...human error , computer glitch, whatever....it gets resolved. The people doing the loudest bitching are those that do not manage their money properly , have over extended there spending arms, desperate to pay a certain bill before the significant other finds out about it , etc.etc. Wake up people....cut up those credit cards, get help for yout over spending habit/shopoholic, gambling , whatever habits. Stop living over your means. With what we get paid... no reason to not live comfortably....(nowhere close to millionaire status). And the new computerized rotating seniority overtime system is going to really put a big big dent in those overtime dollars ....so you all better start looking for some part time jobs! Have a nice day y'all.

I don't see how the new rotating system is going to put a dent anywhere when it comes to overtime. You may not always get just days, or a particular watch to work on, but that's ok. Ot is still going to be there.
The dent comes from management prior to the rotating, who now has a certain watch working with empty dispatcher consoles. Dispatchers carrying 2 zones. Yes they're citywide positions, so now the building is paying one dispatcher to do the work of two. Where is our union at??? IBEW if you're reading this, can I please have my union dues back. I would benefit more from giving it to a homeless guy and trying to get a heavenly brownie point.
When it comes to not getting paid. There really is not a worse crime you can do to an employee then not paying them what they earned. But I must admit they fixed it faster than normal city worker time.

This is they City's doing to cut ot dollars. Basicilly , this will reduce payment for double time days and doing double shifts and of course those few 'great ones' that succeeded in working triple shifts! The city is just abiding by our contract , as it is worded. It was just a very shitty way they put it into action. Hopefully all our stewards and union heads can get things cleared up and better, simpler , language into our next contract.

Speaking of spelling errors,........ is there some way to get a "spell check" on the computers? These jobs that come to the zone are terrible!! How long does it take to RE-READ what you just typed and check your spelling????

Also- keep in mind, any of these calls that you take, can turn up in court. Then the calltakers and dispatchers get subpeonas and are asked about what was written in these events. I've been there - it's true. One day you may end up in court having to explain your spelling errors.
