Residency requirement

We read other blog comments sections, also, and this topic caught our eyes over at SCC.

According to USA Today, a few city police departments around the country are challenging residency rules. Surely, if those challenges are successful, other departments within those cities will no longer be subject to residency requirements.

Sure, we knew about the residency rule when we got hired, but who knew that the cost of living would rise so quickly and dramatically in the city? The "you knew when you took the job" argument is cute, but really, just because something was a certain way when you started off with it doesn't mean it's eternally acceptable. Will there ever be a repeal of the state law that allowed Chicago (which is pretty much a "state" independent of Illinois) to set/keep a residency rule?

We doubt it. But we're wishing upon a star.

"What was she thinking?"

Yes, we browse the comments section, and we come across things like this:

Can anyone break my million dollar bill?

We assume that that person is talking about this story.

It may not be all that common, but don't police officers at least occasionally come across the need to write a worthless document/forgery case report? We may be civilians, but we believe that fradulent checks fall under the "Deceptive Practice" category. And we have no idea why a sworn officer would try to cash a fraudulent check for a large amount - 1 million dollars, no less - with no real worry about getting caught.

The officer maintains her innocence. But if she's guilty (we're not playing judge and jury here), the absurdity is astonishing.

Supervisors' Labor Board Hearing

A reader wrote, on 20Sep06:

Any details (facts , not rumors) on labor board hearing held today for the floor supervisors?

We don't know. Any supervisors monitoring (no pun intended) who can shed light on this? We heard rumors, but facts are requested.

Winds of change?

Someone in the comments section asked about the quietly-kept upcoming Watch Manager promotions, and who's getting the job. The Ops Floor as a whole seems to be pleased with the rumored choices. But we won't add to the rumor mill on that one.

Word that "Our Fearless Leader" is on the way out? Can it be true?

Supervisor bids open (closing on 03Oct06). How many are they hiring? That one brings up another e-mail from a reader:

Subject: Supervisor Applications
To: "ChicagoDispatchBlog"

Not my idea.........but love this one! Co-worker said, "let's ALL apply for the position and make them deal with ALL that paperwork, scheduling of test dates/times, etc!".
If only we could get 100% co-operation on this one....................tooooooooo funny!

Funny. Would they all have to go to the OEMC Personnel section getting moved away from our building? (Just keep the address out of the comments section, no security compromises)

But we hear that there are many changes on the horizon. We just hope it's a positive transition for all. Maybe OEMC Administration is finally making moves in the right direction, instead of putting all of its stock and faith in a person whose main objectives were to justify her position and screw the working stiffs.

We're back again.

Blog update please!!! Where is everyone?

We're here, for your reading/commenting/whining pleasure. No, wait, we have to get it right, that's "fat bitching/complaining/moaning/whining" pleasure (surely that anonymous poster who still visits the blog multiple times a day doesn't think we forgot about him/her?).

We've apparently been missed by the small mass, the tiny group of ever-faithful visitors that has dwindled far less than we thought.

We even got called to the carpet by our brethren on the other side of the radio. We've missed a couple of beats (Read: weeks), but people fail to realize that blogging is no easy task. It isn't easy to come up with new, meaningful topics dealing with the job without beating dead horses.

We have families, children, obligations to meet, and whatever else you can think of (and relate to, if you think about it), in addition to a 6-day work week, 8 hours a day. And sometimes that takes precedence over the occasionally mind-numbing task of updating the blog.

We won't promise daily updates, but for now, at least we're back. There will be new posts to comment on, so you can stop leaving as many off-topic comments under posts.
